Walter Huston, who was born Toronto, Ontario, established himself as one of the great actors of the English-speaking stage and cinema. To the end of his life, O'Neill - the only American playwright to win the Nobel Prize for Literature - maintained that Huston's performance as Ephraim Cabot in that play was the greatest performance by any actor in any of his works. In 1929 he journeyed to Hollywood, where his talent and ability made him one of the most respected actors in the industry. Before 1910, Huston had toured in vaudeville, worked in stock companies, tried to maintain a normal married life, and fathered a son whose life was twice as tempestuous as Walter's: future director John Huston. Huston won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, directed by his son John Huston.
