Lake Corella was formed in 1959 when the Clem Walton Dam was built to collect water for the mining town of Mary Kathleen and is now a popular camping area, especially in the height of tourist season in the cooler months. When full it has a surface area of 320 hectares and holds 15,300 ML of water at an average depth of 4.8 metres, however a hole in the dam … Lake Corella was created in 1959 by the construction of the Clem Walton Dam to provide town water for Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine. No longer the flat plains of Mitchell Grass, there were now hills and spinifex - and more and more ant hills.Before I arrived at Corella Dam there was a sign to a Burke & Wills memorial, so I detoured off the road to check it out.Did you look… It is a welcome relief from the thousands of kilometres of flat dry dull land as far as your eye can see.We planned to stay overnight but stay an extra night here before pressing further north-west.

We think Clem Walton Park is the best free camp we have been to yet or at least one of the best a fantastic place to sit back relax and recharge the batteries with no distractions. Campfires are popular every night, cray pots on ropes in the water, all under a night sky full of huge bright stars and planets.The quiet is blissful and I woke to a chorus of various bird calls.We walked to the top of a nearby hill to gaze out across the large blue dam waters nestled amongst rugged red crags of rocks with a park of white trunked green eucalypts. Brown kites played tag with crows, while tiny zebra finch chirped and flitted in the scrub.This is my idea of a perfect campspot; no signs, no lights, no rules, no power, no amenities, no Internet or TV connection, totally off-grid.
