During the Civil Wars of the 1640s, the castle was held by Major General Rowland Laugharne for the Parliamentarians before switching to the Royalists, with the town taking its name from the General.

Today, the town is centered on the 12th Cathedral and the huge ruins of the Bishops’ Palace next door. There are lots of scenic spots to choose from, such as Worm’s Head and Rhossili Bay. Other museums include the Glynn Vivian Gallery of art and the National Waterfront Museum of Welsh industry and innovation.The prettiest part of Swansea is the Gower Peninsula, Britain's first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The unspoilt country town is famous for its status as the first book-town of the UK, with an economy now largely built on second-hand bookshops, and has been the home of the Hay literary festival since 1988.

It was here in the Wye Valley that “picturesque tourism” began in the 1780s, when the writer William Gilpin wrote his Laugharne on the Taf Estuary is famous for its connection to Dylan Thomas, the poet, and for its setting on the south coast.

The south-eastern tip of Ireland sits just across the Irish Sea from it.Criccieth is perhaps the most picturesque of Welsh coastal towns, with its ruined castle on the headland jutting out into Cardigan Bay and views of the Snowdonia Mountains in the distance inland. Honestly, there’s a huge amount of the best places in South Wales that are dotted right from the border with England to the shores of West Wales.

The town, with its ancient walls and Norman castle, has often been used as a location for TV adaptations of Shakespeare’s works plus it was the backdrop for the film, The small town of Crickhowell, in the Brecon Beacons National Park, sits on the road from Abergavenny to Brecon on the River Usk.

Transport enthusiasts enjoy the engine room and visitor centre, as well as the nearby Fourteen Locks Visitor Centre.The Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales is a draw for cyclists. Up in the main part of the city, there are lots of little shops, pubs and places to eat. From there, you can visit Ramsey Island, Skomer Island and many more, with potential sightings of puffins, whales, dolphins and porpoises on the cards.

Behind the castle is Bute Park, the so-called "green lungs" of the city centre, and the National Museum Cardiff. The Castle and town make such a fine view that the great landscape painter William Turner painted Criccieth in the 1830s with the sea in the foreground. St Asaph Cathedral, which dates back to the 13th century, is the smallest ancient cathedral in Great Britain. That being said, it’s sometimes overlooked when exploring Great Britain in light of its bigger sisters, England and Scotland. The underground arts scene is burgeoning, with pop-up shows and theatre productions. The university ranks highly for student satisfaction and teaching quality, with alumni including the author, director and producer Danny Boyle and poet R S Thomas.

The beaches nearby, such as Whitesands Beach, are immaculate.Due to its coastal location (it falls within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park), St Davids is used as the start and end point for wildlife-spotting boat trips.
