It was originally published in Ariel. There was no fuss.

This is a complex and disturbing image of familial relationships. She is not involved in anything dramatic, powerful, or world-altering. It refers to the eye, but also to a student. What attracts her to the sterility of the hospital room is that it allows her to ignore the complications and pains of living. Her choice of adjectives - "excitable," "red," vivid" - all imbue them with a sense of liveliness. It occurs when a line is cut off before its natural stopping point. Yuck. She asserts in the next lines that in these moments of peace she is “nobody”. “Tulips,” written on March 18th, 1961, is one of Plath’s most beloved and critically acclaimed poems. But, the “tulips filled it up like a loud noise”. The tulips thrust themselves in front of her with all of the brazenness of life. It is one the other side of the equation, juxtaposed against the white of the room and the numbness the nurses give her to ease the pain. The irony of the tulips is that they save her by torturing her, by forcing her to confront a truth that she otherwise would ignore in favor of the easier lifelessness.
She has no context. One knows that eventually they are going to get free and someone is going to get hurt. It was peaceful and breathing was easy. The speaker imagines the tulips being like a hideous little baby, wrapped in white blankets. Enjambment forces a reader down to the next line, and the next, quickly. The main tension in the poem, therefore, is between the speaker’s desire for the simplicity of death and the tulip's encouragement towards life. Now, she has to contend with it all the time. A reader should note the change in the third line of this stanza.

Literature is one of her greatest passions which she pursues through analysing poetry on Poem Analysis.Thank you, Emma. Plath contrasts the whiteness and sterility of the hospital room with the liveliness of the tulips. This form more commonly associates the poem ‘Tulips… Ted Hughes has stated "Tulips" was written about some flowers she received while in a hospital recovering from an appendectomy. It tries to save her, “out of sheer love for [her]”.The final line of the poem takes the reader once more back to the water. The nurses, also in white, allowed her to slip beneath the sea on a wave of anesthetic while she got her procedure.

The speaker is in a hospital bed and describes her experience using an image of red She wishes to remain in a state of emptiness, but the flowers intrude upon this state:The Collected Poems, Harper & Row, New York, 1981 Annotated by Stanford, Ann Folwell Please support this website by adding us to your whitelist in your ad blocker.

As the light lies on these white walls, this bed, these hands. They tend to her as “water / Tends to the pebbles it must run over”. They remind her of her wound, from her appendectomy, but also her mental wounds. She notes how, in the first four stanzas of the poem, the speaker “[describes] the world of the hospital in the yearning tones of one who has already turned her back on it and knows it is slipping away,” and in the fifth, she begins referring to her wish to stay in the past tense. The poem begins with the speaker noting the arrival of red tulips in her hospital room. In the last lines she speaks about the dead, religion, and what it is like to finally have their peace. I am nobody; I have nothing to do with explosions. What this interpretation implies, then, is that the choice of life is necessarily a difficult and painful one, whereas death is not itself a choice but rather simply a refusal to continue living.
Plath married Ted Hughes in 1956. The speaker in the poem claims to understand the tulips as signifiers of a complicated sexual world intruding on the hallowed and clean white world of the hospital. She uses a simile to describe her position on the bed in lines one and two of this stanza. These are the two main images that make up this first stanza. She glances around her, taking in the walls, the bed, her hands. The “air snags and eddies round them”. The poem consists of nine 7-line stanzas with no rhyme scheme. Thank you! These things identify her and are all that’s left when she is “swabbed” clear of her “loving associations”.As a cargo boat, and while continuing the image of water and its powers, Plath describes sinking into the anesthetic while watching her life move away from her. She is on one side pinned up against the “eye of the sun” and on the other “the eyes of the tulips”.The tulips and the sun both represent life and the world beyond the witness of the room and the numbness she is seeking. Pamela Annas bases her argument around the organization of stanzas.

In other words, the verb tenses and tone suggest the speaker is slowly accepting her decision through the poem, rather than actively making the choice.
