I have unfinished novels of a couploe of different types and different genres laying around waiting.Herbert has created a fascinating universe with the ConSentiency, a diverse alliance of an eclectic group of aliens, of which humans are just a small part. It’s one thing to have something like that be part of the plot, but it loses the reader when all of the important relationships are explained by magic hand-waving and instant fixes. Herbert was skilled at creating fascinatingly foreign and complex cultures, and then demonstrating through them the tedious ideas of 1950s-era business gurus which he seemed to hold in high regard. It is not the speed which matters, a good reader knows that.) It took a while to get into it; there were enough gems interspersed to keep me hoping it might get better. There isn't the universe depth of the Dune series; that's not possible in two short books and a novella. What separates this from that is that "The Dosadi Experiment" deals with more uncertainties regarding the future of space travel, colonization, consent when it comes to technological breakthroughs as well as the ethical boundaries that come with it or that we -as humans- and other species are willing to break to reach their goal.Frank Herbert fans, sci fi fans, Literature studentsI’m somewhat glad that I read this after “Whipping Star,” because to some degree it has restored my faith in Herbert as being a decent author, that “Dune” was not just a fluke.

If you are a past Frank Herbert reader, you already know this. We’d love your help. The characters are fairly unlovable. This set an appropriately macro scale for the Byzantine plotting that followed, and suited the skill set of a science fiction author, a breed used to painting in broad strokes. Oddly, though, while it slightly raises my opinion of Herbert, I find that I still find myself thinking of him as a bit more human, a bit less perfect, and thus as “Dune” itself as a bit less impressive. Some people read fast, some don't. It was an okay book. [When a civil war finally breaks out on Dosadi, the story jumps from just before war breaks out to about six days into the war. You go from relative 'peace' immediately into 'war' [but there is not that much description of the fighting, which is fine]. Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. You have to absorb EVERYTHING, from star to finish. Because the planet has poisons everywhere, the millions of inhabitants live in one valley. I first read it as a teenager and it made a big impression on me. I have just recently finished re-reading it and if anything am more awe-struck than before.
